Abstract:

The retail industry is undergoing a profound digitalization-driven transformation, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) being a pivotal force in optimizing operations and enhancing customer loyalty. While e-commerce continues to expand, stationary retail faces increasing competitive pressure, necessitating innovative strategies. Utilizing AI seems promising for improving operational efficiency and ensuring long-term competitiveness. Given the economic relevance of the sector, competitive challenges, and evolving potential of the AI-driven applications, it is crucial to examine the current state of AI implementation within stationary retail stores. We analyze contemporary AI applications in stationary retail from the literature, combined with practical insights from leading retailers and classify the applications to activities of the shell model for retail information systems, focusing on core economic-operational tasks. Our results show an increased use of AI for serving customers in literature and an evenly distribution among the tasks of ordering goods, making goods available and serving customers in practice.
